Stay plugged – use a bulb.
By 2012, the incandescent lamp will have been phased out, and already by September 2009, the first ramifications of this EU decision will be felt.
As a private consumer, you will encounter new light sources such as incandescent mains halogens, energy-saving lamps and LEDs. All light sources serving a common goal: to save energy.
Louis Poulsen is not new to working with different types of light sources. For years, we have focused on energy-saving light sources.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the incandescent lamp became the foundation of Louis Poulsen’s lighting production; indeed, designer Poul Henningsen started his research and design of lighting fixtures to make the incandescent lamp more human.
Since then, Louis Poulsen has been applying a lighting philosophy that basically focuses on preserving the good properties of the light source while eliminating e.g. glare when designing and producing fixtures. Consequently, a fixture from Louis Poulsen is much more than just a shade coupled with a lamp holder.
The new light sources are in some respects not as good as the incandescent lamp. There may be significant difference in colour rendering properties, lighting time and dimming possibilities, etc. However, they all save more energy, which is now more important than ever.

Louis Poulsen constantly tests and evaluates a broad range of light sources in fixtures. Some are better than others, and it is important to emphasise that light source quality differs greatly.
Colour rendition is also highlighted as a weak point in energy-saving lamps. Find a picture with many nuances of the colours yellow, blue, red and green.
View the colours under the incandescent lamp and then the energy-saving lamps. Choose the energy-saving lamp you find gives the best rendition of the picture. Taste differs. Buy a good-quality energy-saving lamp for optimum lighting experience and as long life as possible.
You also need to be aware that energy-saving lamps cannot be dimmed. You can buy special dimmable energy-saving lamps, but most energy-saving lamps in the market cannot be dimmed. So if you have a dimming system in your house or a fixture with a dimmer, the light source will not work.
But our best advice on energy saving is: Turn off the light when you leave the room. You will be surprised how much this and using energy-saving lamps will save you in electricity bills.
Last but not least: The energy-saving lamp must be handled with care when discarded. Handle it as a used battery, as we will otherwise lose on the environment what we gain in terms of energy.
